Cursed Objects (( (じゅ) , {{{3}}})( (ぶつ) , {{{3}}}), Jubutsu?) are items with a dark history that contain cursed energy.[1] They generally consist of the remnants of ancient sorcerers that can be incarnated into a new body if the cursed object is consumed by a compatible vessel.[2]

Description

With the exception of cursed tools and cursed corpses, items that contain cursed energy are referred to as cursed objects. Cursed objects are ranked in the same way as cursed tools, based on the strength of the cursed energy they contain. Particularly dangerous cursed objects, such as Sukuna's fingers, are ranked special grade. Following the logic of controlling poison with poison, sealed special grade cursed objects can be used as amulets to ward off cursed spirits.[3][1]

Special grade cursed objects cannot be destroyed and their continued existence is guaranteed under the binding vow used to create them. This binding vow dictates that individuals who become cursed objects cease to live and cannot harm others. Sukuna uniquely continues to attract curses and harm others, even after being split into twenty fingers.[4][1] Sukuna, and those incarnated for the Culling Game required Kenjaku's help to transform themselves into cursed objects after death. Sukuna learned how to perform the technique on himself after experiencing it, allowing him to turn his finger into a cursed object and feed it to Megumi Fushiguro in order to possess him.[5][6]

Cursed objects are mostly used to incarnate sorcerers or to ward away curses, but some possess supernatural abilities even while existing as inanimate items. Prison Realm, a special grade cursed object and the remains of a sorcerer known as Genshin, can produce a barrier powerful enough to seal anything, even Satoru Gojo.[7]

Incarnation

Incarnation (( (じゅ) , {{{3}}})( (にく) , {{{3}}}), Juniku?)[8] is a state in which an ancient cursed object acquires a physical body using a human being as a "vessel" (, utsuwa?). If a human ingests a cursed object, the owner of the cursed energy contained within that cursed object can take hold of their mind and body and can even change their appearance. It is best described as the fusion between a cursed object and human flesh. In most cases, the host's body is completely taken over and their consciousness is completely suppressed.[9] Incarnated individuals receive memories, knowledge, and common sense from their vessel's brains. They also retain their innate technique and all of their physical skills from their original body as well.

The conversion process of a person into cursed object after death is esoteric knowledge that most people don't know. Kenjaku made binding vows with hundreds of sorcerers over the course of a millennium to transform each of their remains into cursed objects. The individuals accepted Kenjaku's invitation because they didn't know how to become cursed objects and desired a second chance at life. Kenjaku had numerous vessels prepped for the Culling Game by having them consume those cursed objects in the modern day. During the {{JJK|Shibuya Incident]], Kenjaku used Idle Transfiguration to adjust the bodies of his selected individuals to give them strength as vessels. At the same time, he removed his binding vows on the cursed objects and allowed all of the past sorcerers to incarnate for the Culling Game.[10]

Sukuna is a special case of incarnation in several facets. Unlike most cursed objects, Sukuna's fingers can choose his host and possess such a powerful presence that they can still attract cursed spirits after a thousand years.[11] Yuji Itadori is a "cage" (, ori?) for Sukuna rather than a proper vessel, an incredibly unusual circumstance where the vessel can sometimes overpower and contained the entity sealed within the cursed object.

Sukuna could tell Yuji was a cage shortly after incarnating into his body. Hana Kurusu shares a similar symbiotic relationship with the Angel, but unlike Sukuna, she actively chose not to take over Hana's body. Sukuna wanted to transfer himself over to Megumi Fushiguro but he sensed that he had the potential to withstand him and could become a cage as well. After becoming a cursed object once before, Sukuna learned how to divide his soul as a cursed object. He waited until Megumi's soul was crushed by a traumatic event, dampening his potential as a cage, and then transferred himself from Yuji's body into Megumi's by forcing him the latter to consume his finger.

The Cursed Womb: Death Paintings were cursed objects created under special circumstances and sealed with a binding vow for 150 years. Death Paintings can be incarnated with any vessel, unlike Sukuna's fingers, and result in a fully fleshed cursed spirit as opposed to a sorcerer.[12]
