Ageha Narukami (鳴神 園花 , Narukami Ageha?, lit. Sound Divinity Swallowtail Butterfly) is the main female heroine of Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Castle Avidya.
She is the designated heiress to Hidenobu Narukami, the current head of the Narukami Family, one of the Five Great Sorcerer Clans, and a Special-Grade Jujutsu Sorcerer of the Narukami Family. She is also the fiancée of the designated heir of the Arai Family, Kouki Arai.
Background[]
Ageha Narukami was born on October 27, 2005, being the second daughter and fourth child overall of the heir to the Narukami family, Junpei Narukami, and his consort, Kanae Narukami. Immediately from birth, she was discovered to have a problem: her eyesight was incredibly impaired to the point that she could barely see; she was medically diagnosed with a profoundly low vision of 20/850. Her impaired vision had profound effects on her development as it gave her great difficulty in performing tasks that should she have had normal vision, would be very simple to complete, and once she was capable of forming full conscious thoughts and learning how to speak, she cursed her inability to do basic things which was the large spark needed to ignite her cursed energy and from that point on, it began to grow as it tempered itself over and over. A year after her birth, she was blessed with the arrival of a younger sister, Yumemi, and a younger brother the year following.
Upon turning four, she picked up the sword and began training, learning the Narukami Shintō-ryū, her family's personal sword style. Upon being first taught the Inherited Technique of the Narukami family, Ageha displayed something strange in one specific application of the family's powers that had yet to be properly documented before. This impressed the family as a whole as Ageha's genius as a jujutsu sorcerer begin rearing its head. Two years later at the age of six, Ageha's turn for the ceremony of selecting a wielder for Narakumo—the family heirloom of the Narukami family—came around, with all three of her older siblings having also underwent this trial but were unfortunately unsuccessful in forming a close bond with this cursed tool, as none could handle its cost of the tool constantly anc consistently draining copious amounts of their cursed energy. As a result, her siblings renounced their right to the sword and once the ceremony for Ageha's attempt came to pass, her parents did not expect much as they figured that this time would be the same—the pessimism of another failure outweighed the optimism of a miraculous success, yet, shattering all expectations and contrary to the overwhelmingly negative odds, Ageha was able to perfectly wield the cursed tool. An event that she looks back at fondly—labeling it a "truly great episode of childish folly," she even raised her voice, declaring that she had found her partner.
With Narakumo—the Hell Spider—at her side, Ageha became an exceedingly powerful sorcerer as seen when she became the youngest first-class sorcerer in history not long after she had turned nine; this unprecedented promotion is backed by her exemplary track record as she had been able to exorcise numerous first-class curse spirits in addition to a foreign operation in Korea which led to her purifying two intelligent unregistered special-grade curse spirits on her lonesome. Before her promotion to first-class sorcerer when she was still eight years old, her parents set her up for an omiai—a formal meeting set up by a special counsel and the attendees' respective parents between two people who have not yet met before the meeting with the intent to marry them to each other―with the son of the Arai family who held dominion over the far south of Kyushu. Upon meeting him, Ageha felt a strong affinity to him—his cursed energy strangely soothed her. Once they got to know each other, it was decided that they were to be married at their third meeting. Ageha was overjoyed as she had finally found the man that she would devote her entire life, body, and soul to. Despite only being ten upon making this vow, Ageha trusted that her beloved would remain at her side through everything; she even took the opportunity to create a Binding Vow wherein she exchanges what little sight she has for a restriction that binds her naturally massive reserves of cursed energy.
This Binding Vow would soon become inseparable from the young Ageha who a year after her vows to Kouki, encountered an ocean-based cursed spirit off the coast of Hokkaido and reportedly exorcised it by awakening to a Domain Expansion, a feat that she would have never been capable of without the Binding Vow she had placed on herself. Upon showing proof of her Domain Expansion to the higher staff, it was decided that Ageha Narukami was to be promoted to Special-Grade sorcerer, making her the fifth and youngest ever Special-Grade sorcerer of the current times. Mentored by Satoru Gojo who is considered the undisputed strongest among the special-grade sorcerers, he provides advice to Ageha concerning how to make better use of her newly developed Domain Expansion, trusting that she can master it to a level surpassing that of his own in the future. Upon turning thirteen two years following her promotion to special-grade, Ageha was selected to matriculate into Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School as her academic track record allowed her to easily skip a few grades despite having great difficulty reading and writing because of her poor vision since birth. There was also the reasoning that she was extremely young and while she is a special-grade sorcerer, she should first be kept in some semblance of safety until she reaches adulthood (at least, that is the logic used by her parents who have more than just a few streaks of overprotectiveness). Ageha's admission into Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School sets yet another record as she would be the youngest student to ever grace its grounds.
Appearance[]
Ageha Narukami has been described by many to be a "flower on a high peak" (高嶺の花, takane no hana). This term is an idiom mostly used to describe a beautiful woman so dazzling, it is only possible to admire her from afar. Her beauty is renowned throughout the sorcerer community with her being made into the poster child for sorcery—she is lauded as an "idol" of sorts. While the origin of the rumor is up in the air, it is said that if one were to catch a glimpse of Ageha's opened red orchid-hued eyes that see nothing, they will be blessed with good fortune for the rest of the year.
Despite her bloated reputation, Ageha often chooses to dress rather meekly. She does up her flowing purple hair into waist-length twintails and a double hair bun on the left and right sides of her crown which has sometimes led people to call her a kitten as the hair buns look a lot like cat ears; others say that it resembles a fox's ears as her wily personality reminds them of a fox's cunning brand of intelligence. Ageha usually wears a pale lavender top with a high violet collar and ruffled dark blue skirt, layered under a deep violet overcoat. The opening of her overcoat is marked by a golden ornament, which has white flowers and purple and gold-accented feathers attached. The pattern of the feathers resembles the ones on the dangling backs of her long sleeves. In addition, she wears a golden hairpin, a tasseled choker, and dark gloves with lavender trim. She is also usually seen wearing either a blindfold or bandages to cover her eyes as she is blind; of course, these come off in battle as even if she sees nothing, Ageha often chooses to open her eyes to "take in" the battle.
Upon the decision to matriculate her into the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, Ageha trades her normal combat dress for Tokyo Metropolitan's standard uniform, consisting of a dark blue gakuran-style top (a button-down jacket) and a long matching skirt that reaches to just above her knees. She also wears full-length pantyhose along with black high-heels (which don't particularly impede her walking despite being blind). Her sword is always hooked to her left waist as she refuses to ever go anywhere without it. She also wears a haori over her school uniform, said haori being decorated in the family crest of the Narukami family to prove her lineage.
Abilities[]
General Abilities[]
As a sorcerer of one of the Five Great Families, Ageha has had innate talent since birth, proven in the fact that she was able to utilize cursed energy not long after turning three years of age. Among Narukami sorcerers, her cursed energy is of a potency rarely seen in the history of the family with only the second, eighth, and fifteenth family heads having a greater documented potency of cursed energy. She has a massive reservoir of power which jujutsu scholars attribute to her greatly impaired vision; they theorize that her poor ability to see resulted in her consciously and/or subconsciously cursing her misfortune which serves as the fuel needed to create highly purified cursed energy. When compared to her siblings, Ageha has the highest measured internal concentration of cursed energy, the most efficient cursed energy consumption methodology, and the greatest burst output—both controlled and uncontrolled.
A natural bodily response that compensates for Ageha's poor sight, both her sense of hearing and her sense of touch are super-enhanced to a point that she can both hear and feel 10 times better than the normal human. Upon her meeting with Kouki Arai and making her personal vow to him, Ageha placed a Binding Vow on herself; so dubbed Imperfect Apotheosis (不全神化 , Fuzen Shinka?), she completely blinds herself and limits her cursed energy output to around 80-90% of her normal maximum output. In exchange, she gains greater enhancements to her already enhanced hearing and sense of touch, although these additional enhancements can be further finetuned. At the greatest possible enhancement, Ageha's sense of hearing and touch become five hundred times stronger than normal. To lift the Binding Vow placed on herself, Ageha must agree to leave the realm of humans behind with her cursed energy output now increased to 110%-120% of her maximum output; in addition, she also regains a normal level of eyesight for the duration the Binding Vow is undone. This is to assist in the deployment of her Domain Expansion and her enhanced Inherited Technique.
While under the influence of her self-imposed Binding Vow, Ageha can employ a form of "pseudo-vision" where by sending out regular pulses of cursed energy, she is able to construct a map inside of her head of what is in her surroundings based on what her cursed energy is detecting. Acting similarly to radar, Ageha's "pseudo-vision" allows her to function as normal without the general needs of a blind person, enough that she is able to keep up with her education as well as surpass the grade level of her similarly aged peers who do are not disabled. As a result, Ageha is quite convinced that her "pseudo-vision" is in no way inferior to the normal vision most individuals have, a sentiment shared by her family but not so much by her fiancé who still fusses over her.
Jujutsu[]
The first thing to note about Ageha's jujutsu capabilities is the special trait of her lineage; the Narukamis are one of the only known sorcerer families of having most—if not all—of its members capable of using inverse cursed energy. Inverting cursed energy to birth positive cursed energy sounds contradictory but it can be achieved and it is a rather difficult feat. For the members of the Narukami family (as well as their branch families), inverting cursed energy is extremely simple and similarly to the rest of her family, Ageha primarily utilizes the inverse cursed energy she generates for either self-regeneration or to heal the wounds of others. Among her family members, however, Ageha is able to use a technique that has only been documented in historical texts of the family. Given the name of Cursed Technique Inversion: Simple Domain: Paradise Pure Land (術式反転「簡易領域・楽園純地」 , Jutsushiki Hanten: Kan'i Ryōiki: Rakuen Junchi?). Via this technique, Ageha creates a variable-sized Simple Domain in which said area is flooded with inverted cursed energy to create a "land" in which all wounds sorcerers receive are automatically healed. She can either use this in solo operations to keep her body in perfect shape, only stopping when her mental stamina gives out, or when fighting in groups with other sorcerers—this is rather rare considering her rank as Special-Grade Sorcerer. Among Narukami clansmen, Ageha's Simple Domain is the most powerful seen in recent times, only surpassed by her grandfather's who is himself an unparalleled genius of a jujutsu sorcerer.
Cursed Techniques[]
As a member of the Narukami clan, Ageha uses the Inherited Technique, Thunder Advent; at its simplest, it is a cursed technique that allows the user to via either cursed energy manipulation or cursed energy transmutation allows the user to manipulate and create electricity, respectively. As a more combat-oriented jujutsu sorcerer, Ageha primarily uses the technique to enhance her swordplay—as, in addition to running cursed energy through her sword, she electrifies her blade by channeling lightning through her blade as well. Known as Thunder Advent — Chidori Blade, it is an application of the Thunder Advent — Chidori documented in the records of the Narukami family; it has been named as such as the sound the techique makes when deployed is akin to the simultaneous chirping of one thousand songbirds. Ageha's Chidori Blade is known to be the most effective version of it seen in the family, perhaps because she is channeling the technique through the Narakumo which is a rather dubious claim seeing as all other previous users of the Chidori Blade technique also wielded the Narakumo.
Usually as part of Imperfect Apotheosis, Ageha's cursed technique output is limited to 80-90% of her maximum possible output, however, during times when this restricted output is not enough, Ageha can invoke Imperfect Apotheosis, boosting her cursed technique's output to 110%-120%. Additionally, for the duration she is unfettered by her Binding Vow, Ageha's vision is restored to a normal level—enhanced by her greater cursed energy output as prior to afflicting total blindness to herself, her vision was already extraordinarily poor. During her life's greatest crisis, Ageha broke her Binding Vow and advanced her cursed techniques to the point that she was able to project her Innate Domain into the physical space of reality. Awakening to her personal Domain Expansion, Vajra's Serene Fulmination, she used it to exorcise the ocean-based special-grade cursed spirit that had coalesced off the coast of Hokkaido where the Ishikari River meets the sea. This Domain Expansion establishes a territory that mirrors the tranquility of Ageha's heart.
Within Vajra's Serene Fulmination, the effectiveness of Thunder Advent is massively enhanced to the point that Ageha develops a new technique, Thunder Advent — Wondrous Virtue Saintblade. It is a technique that "guarantees" a fatal cut to any target she sees, which is only possible due to the invocation of Imperfect Apotheosis. With her restored vision, Ageha spots and "locks-on" to any target or targets within her line of sight and performs a battōjutsu, a sword-drawing technique. This maneuver then summons a crackle of lightning shaped like a sword arc and bisects while simultaneously electrocuting the victim.
Narukami Shintō-ryū[]
The Narukami Shintō-ryū is the main combat style used by Narukami sorcerers and Ageha is—put simply—a true genius of the sword. From the second she was able to pick one up, she displayed extremely rapid growth, absorbing all of the family style's practices like a sponge. She even easily learned the 12 kata, having already displayed the ability to generate and maintain a Simple Domain by the age of six. Her skill with the sword is among the best among sorcerers even when one factors in her young age and the breathing room she has to improve, a fact that her grandfather who also serves as the current grandmaster of the family's style takes pride in. Satoru Gojo—reputed to be modern society's strongest jujutsu sorcerer—is one of the persons of interest who is greatly invested in Ageha's growth, seen on occasion when he tutors Ageha during his off-time in between missions.
Equipment[]
Narakumo[]
As part of the training in the family's martial arts style, Ageha's a practiced hand in many types of weapons, including the katana, the paired daishō, the yari and naginata, and yumi. Her arms mastery is mainly concentrated in the katana and yari, however, which affects Ageha's main weapon of choice, being the family heirloom passed down in the Narukami lineage, the special-grade cursed tool Narakumo. Despite its rather nasty disposition of actively draining its wielder of cursed energy unless "acknowledged" by the sword itself, she is able to use it to great effects, performing the family sword style through this sword with deadly precision. The sword's unique ability to create far stronger slashes than it should be capable of also ensures that Ageha's cuts remain exceedingly lethal.
Lightning Raiment[]
The outfit which Ageha usually wears is actually a specially crafted battle-dress, combining all of the arts and crafts of the Narukami family into a single set of clothing. Given the name of Lightning Raiment (雷鳴衣装 , Raimei Ishō?), this dress when run through with cursed energy becomes practically indestructible—it strengthens into an armor of fabric that encases Ageha's body. While, by default, she also protects herself with a hardened layer of cursed energy around her entire person, the Lightning Raiment boosts her defenses, especially when she is fighting special-grade cursed spirits; she cannot and will not hold back against these opponents as doing so will mean instant death. The Lightning Raiment can also easily channel the Inherited Technique of her family, stimulating her senses even further while simultaneously removing limits placed on her body. The human body naturally limits the full strength a person can output because continuously doing so will damage the body, sometimes irreversibly if repeated too many times. In the case of Ageha, she can easily heal those wounds with her ability to readily generate inversed cursed energy and as such, does not need to worry about irreparably damaging her body. With the natural limits on her body removed, she can fight to extreme levels.
